July 2017

July was a busy month! In early July we went out to Hampton Court Palace for the day in hopes of watching the advertised jousting tournament. Unfortunately they had to cancel the joust due to muddy conditions (the ground is perpetually muddy in the UK) but we enjoyed our visit anyway. Rachel and Carson have learned about King Henry VIII at school so it was great to see one of his palaces.

Rachel took part in the play put on by her class at school - Alice in Wonderland. She was a wonderful Mad Hatter, she really got into her part and amazed us all with her acting talent.

Below is Rachel's class of 24 girls on their last day of school the second week in July. They put on a few songs for the parents and did some readings. This marks the end of primary school in the UK - Rachel is finishing Year 6 (the equivalent of 5th grade in the US). Year 7 is considered secondary school here in the UK. So this ceremony at her school was a bit of saying goodbye to childhood as the girls prepare for senior school.

On to our vacation in the US! We decided to make the trek 'across the pond' to New England in the middle of July. We started at Cape Cod where the kids had a chance to see Grandad, Aunt Ginie and they had a few days to play with their cousins Shivani and Jake. We reveled in the warmth and sunshine and enjoyed some great swimming at Slough.

On to Camp! Next we headed to the north woods of Maine to join Grampy and Grammy at their wonderful camp. We had an amazing week of unwinding and enjoying the great outdoors. The blueberries weren't quite in season but we were able to collect enough for a delicious pie. Even John had to turn off his cell phone since there is no coverage - the only way to truly relax.
